Lead vocalist Kisha and her sister Alison have been singing together since childhood. Kisha has performed on
Stars in Their Eyes, while Alison regularly sings backing for Mercury Prize nominee Terri Walker. Sax and flute player Owen Thomas has recorded several albums in Barcelona, and been a featured soloist on
This is Drum and Bass.
Together, we have performed several hundred times over the past nine years. We have taken the stage at night-clubs, hotels and weddings throughout the UK and Ireland, and as far afield as Dubai, Marbella and Sardinia. We have also appeared on LWT and Live!TV.
All our tracks are arranged, produced and recorded by us in-house. Although usking karaoke CDs is easier (and not uncommon), doing things our way means:
- The tracks are unique.
-
The arrangements are geared towards a live performance, with floor-filling intros, crowd-pleasing solos and plenty of scope for audience participation.
-
The productions are tailored to work well together as a set, and to bring out the best in the band.
Although we are hired as performers, our professional responsibilities begin long before we take the stage. We believe our job includes both performing
and making sure things run smoothly. This means checking all details well in advance, to ensure that we bring the right equipment to the right place at the right time.
Of course you can't always plan for everything, which is where experience comes into play: we've sourced adaptors in Dubai, coped with generators in rural Spain, and used coat hangers as arials in Amsterdam. Whatever it takes, the show
will go on!
Our half-live, half playback lineup is unusual, but not accidental. As musicians, we want our performances to sound consistently excellent; as professionals, we need to provide this quality at reasonable prices and with minimum fuss.
Although we enjoy working with other musicians, we know that making a live band sound good involves extra personnel, equipment, and cost. With our line-up, clients get a great-sounding band, who set up quickly and quietly, don't take up loads of room and don't have to charge the earth.
Without wanting to be too technical, we use a top-of-the-range 1,200W PA system, comprising Peavey Black Widow bass-bins and cabs, with QSC power amps. The system is powerful enough to fill even large halls, but is compact nonetheless. We also have compact LED and laser lighting for the stage and dance floor.
Some events organisers prefer to use their own sound-and-light-people, and we are happy to work that way too. We are also happy to work with sound restrictions, if any apply. Even if there are no restrictions, we always make sure the sound levels are appropriate to the event.
This is the question we asked ourselves when our first ad appeared in B~ magazine back in 2006 (
see right). As you'll have noticed, they chopped off just enough information to render the ad useless; but we often wondered whether any brides-to-be ever phoned Date about his reggae lute repertoire.
Our bemusment, and its appearance on our site, led to a surprise arrival in our inbox earlier this year:
"Hi Soulscape, Just discovered your mention of me on your site - an unlikely combination of course!
I've no idea when this print error took place but I hope you contacted B~ magazine and got a refund.
Best wishes to you all for many gigs and long may you continue to entertain.
Dante"
We did get a refund, as it happens - but it was worth every penny!
